Thock
Thock is a small Mac app that makes any keyboard and mouse sound like an expensive mechanical keyboard. Every sound tells you how much of it comes from a real recording.
Press a key
Click the keys or type while this is on screen. The sound is synthesised in your browser, like Thock’s estimated switches; the app also plays real recordings.
The problem
Half the pleasure of a good mechanical keyboard is the sound. Laptop keyboards are silent, and the apps that add sound usually repeat one recording, so every key sounds the same and the effect wears off in seconds.
They also rarely say where their sounds come from. A switch with a famous name might be a real recording or a guess.
What I built
- A Mac app that lives in the menu bar and plays a sound for every key you press and every click you make.
- Sound with almost no delay, where every press is slightly different and keys on the left sound from the left, like a real keyboard on your desk.
- A catalogue of real switch recordings (from open, free-to-use collections) plus recreated switches tuned to sound like those recordings.
- Mouse clicks with their own sounds, heard from the side of the screen where the pointer is.
- Support for sound packs made by the community, a choice of headphones or speakers, and a volume that stays steady when you change the Mac’s volume.

Labels that tell the truth
Every sound says what it is: a real recording, a real recording key by key, tuned to a recording, or an estimate. You always know what you are hearing.

Recreated sounds that never repeat
Where no recording exists, the sound is recreated from how a key, its plate and its case resonate, with sixteen variations per key so nothing sounds copied.

Private by design
Thock only knows which key was pressed, never what you type. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
